Rob Font

Puerto Rico

Upset win in huge spot
BantamweightUFC
October 20, 2024
Font defeated Kyler Phillips via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Entering a loser of four of his last five fights and facing a potential star in the bantamweight division, few could have seen this result coming. Font was grounded for most of Round 1, an issue for him in the past, but he was the much better conditioned athlete and put it on Phillips over the course of the final two frames. With Kyler clearly gassing, Rob remained aggressive and piled up the volume. The fact Font is now 37 years of age is strongly working against him, but those previously mentioned four defeats came against Deiveson Figueiredo, Cory Sandhagen, Marlon Vera and Jose Aldo. In other words, the best the division has to offer. Font might not be done just yet.

Slated to face Phillips
BantamweightUFC
August 3, 2024
Font will take on Kyler Phillips in a bantamweight bout at a UFC event on Oct. 19 in Las Vegas, Nolan King of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Font is in dire need of a victory, as he's dropped four of his past five fights, dropping his UFC record to 10-7-0. He was most recently defeated by Deiveson Figueiredo via unanimous decision in December of 2023. His less-experienced opponent Phillips, meanwhile, has won three straight fights. With the two fighters very similar in measurables and skill level, this could be a razor-thin contest.
Struggles continue in Austin
BantamweightUFC
December 2, 2023
Font lost to Deiveson Figueiredo via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 27-30) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Austin, Texas.
ANALYSIS
Font was looking to rebound from a main event loss to Cory Sandhagen this past August in which he spent nearly all five rounds on his back. This seemed like a potential rebound spot against an opponent in Figueiredo that was competing in a new weight class. It wasn't meant to be. Font is a volume striker, and although he won the significant strike battle by a 46-45 count, Deiveson landed the harder shots throughout the course of the bout. Toss in the fact Figueiredo connected on 4-of-7 takedown attempts, and Font had no chance to win a decision. Rob is in significant trouble moving forward. He's now 36 years of age and is rocking a 1-4 record in his past five fights dating back to December 2021.
Next bout scheduled
BantamweightUFC
September 22, 2023
Font is slated to fight Deiveson Figueiredo at a UFC event on Dec. 2, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Font will look to get back on track after losing his most recent bout with Cory Sandhagen. The 36-year-old American, who currently boasts a 10-6 record within the UFC, will look to get back on the winning path against Deiveson Figueiredo.
Routed in main event loss
BantamweightUFC
August 5, 2023
Font lost to Cory Sandhagen via unanimous decision (45-50, 45-50, 45-50) at UFC on ESPN 50 on Saturday in Nashville.
ANALYSIS
It's going to be quite a while before we see a UFC main event as lopsided as this one. Font agreed to step in here for an injured Umar Nurmagomedov (shoulder) in mid-July. As a result, a fight between two natural bantamweights was contested at a catchweight of 140 pounds. The problem with that for Font is that Sandhagen is gigantic for 135 pounds. Unable to defend a takedown, Rob spent nearly the entire five rounds on his back. In a bout that lasted 25 minutes, Font was credited with nine (that is not a misprint) significant strikes landed. Simply put, the deck was stacked against Font here before things even began, and it only got worse once the bell rang. Rob is now 36 years of age and is just 1-3 in his past four bouts, but the company would never risk sending him packing after he bailed them out and agreed to fight here. Font does need to win his next time out, however.
New fight scheduled
BantamweightUFC
July 20, 2023
Font will fight Cory Sandhagen in a five-round catchweight bout at UFC Nashville on Aug. 5, according to Marc Raimondi of ESPN.
ANALYSIS
Font was supposed to fight Yadong Song at UFC 292, but the latter withdrew. Meanwhile, Sandhagen was scheduled to fight Umar Nurmagomedov before the latter withdrew with a shoulder injury. It made sense for the UFC to pair the available top-seven bantamweights against each other. But with less than three weeks to go before UFC Nashville, Sandhagen-Font will be a catchweight bout so that neither, but particularly the latter, needs to worry about a drastic weight cut after the sudden change of plans.
